Santa Fe National Historic Trailhead

Between 1821 and 1880s, Santa Fe National Historic Trail was the major trade and travel route between Independence, Missouri, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The original trail is marked with limestone posts.

Commercial tours required to have a special use permit. Fees vary. Contact the Forest Service office in La Junta phone 719-384-2181, for futher information.
Santa Fe Trail is for non-motorized travel only. However interpretative signs at Sierra Vista, Timpas Picnic Area, Iron Springs, and the Carrizo Auto Tour Pullout provide information about the trail.
