Firewood Permits Available for Online Purchase

DEL NORTE, Colo., March 12, 2025 – Firewood permits for the Rio Grande National Forest are now available for purchase through a new online E-Permit system. Permits may be purchased by computer or mobile device at any time, eliminating travel to your local Forest Service office. In addition, the price per cord will be reduced to the minimum allowable price of $2.00 per cord sometime in the coming weeks. 

“This new online service provides flexibility and convenience to our forest users,” said Forest Supervisor Dennis Kuhnel. “We’ve long recognized the need to bring this service to our public and are pleased to be one of the nation’s early adopters of the program. I’m additionally pleased to soon be offering the firewood at a lower price.” The $2.00/cord price is designed to provide relief for area residents to heat their homes. The lower price will be effective when system administrators are able to make the necessary changes. The $20 minimum purchase still applies.

Firewood permits will still be available for purchase at local Forest Service offices. The Forest Service will continue to refine and improve the quality of the online permit system and plans to add additional special forest product permits in the future.
