Storm King Campground

Current Conditions
Storm King Campground is open until November 2026. Please contact the Saguache Ranger District at 719-655-2547 for current conditions and updates.

The campground is situated at the base of Storm King Mountain (elevation 10,849 feet). It lies in an aspen glen amidst rolling and rocky hills on the Middle Fork of Carnero Creek. There are 6 campsites and 2 picnic sites with tables, fire rings. A vault toilet is available. Drinking water is not available on site. Campground is first-come, first-served and pack in-pack out.

General Information

Mid-May to mid-November

Open 7 days a week with quiet hours from 10 pm to 6 am.

No horses or livestock is allowed within the campground. Please make sure your campfires are dead out.

With a senior or access interagency pass, overnight camping rates can be reduced by 50%.

Overnight Use:
Single Site: $10 per night

Dogs must be on a leash not longer than six feet in length.

Carnero Guard Station cabin is nearby. Rates are $50.00/night. Reservations for the cabin must be made at Recreation.gov.

Directions

From Saguache, Colorado:

  1. Take CO Highway 114 west for 14.5 miles to County Road 41G.
  2. Follow Forest Road 690 (CR 41G) south for 14 miles, over Carnero Pass to reach the campground.

From Monte Vista, Colorado:

  1. From U.S. Highway 285, take the La Garita turnoff (County Road 41G).
  2. Follow the paved road west for 6.0 miles to a fork.
  3. Take the gravel Carnero Creek Road (FR 690 / CR 41G).
  4. Continue northwest 14.5 miles to the campground.

Travel Considerations

  • County Road 41G (FR 690) becomes dirt and narrows to single‑lane with turnouts after entering the National Forest. 
  • Motorized access to the picnic area may be restricted by snow and seasonal road closures from March 15 to May 15.

Parking

Parking is limited in the campground area. Maximum trailer length is 25 feet.
