Hanging Lake Occupancy and Use
The following acts are prohibited on those National Forest Service lands described as the Hanging Lake National Natural Landmark Area and on all trails within the Restricted Area within the Eagle/Holy Cross Ranger District, White River National Forest:

Forest Order
Pursuant to 16 United States Code (U.S.C.) § 551 and 36 Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R.) § 261.S0(a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited on those National Forest Service lands described as the Hanging Lake National Natural Landmark Area (the "Restricted Area") and on all trails within the Restricted Area (the "Trails'') all within the Eagle/Holy Cross Ranger District, White River National Forest. The Restricted Area and Restricted Trails are depicted on the attached map hereby incorporated into this Order as Exhibit A.
The purpose of this Order is to protect natural resources.
PROHIBITIONS:
- Camping within the Restricted Area. 36 C.F.R. § 26l .58(e)
- Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire or campfire within the Restricted Area. 36 C.F.R. § 26 I .52(a)
- Entering or being in Hanging Lake, including swimming and wading. 36 C.F.R. § 26 l.58(k)
- Fishing in Hanging Lake. 36 C.F.R. § 26I .58(v.)
- Hiking off Forest Service Trail (FST) 1850 within the Restricted Area. 36 C.F.R. § 261.53(a).
- Possessing or transporting an animal, including dogs, within the Restricted Area. 36 C.F.R.§ 26l .58(s) EXCEPT: Persons being aided by a service dog.
- Shortcutting a switchback in a trail. 36 C.F.R. § 26l .55(e)
- Being on the Hanging Lake Trail (FST 1850) or Spouting Rock Trail FST 1850.1 as depicted on the attached map (Exhibit A) without possessing a permit specifically exempting the act. 36 C.F.R. § 26l .55(a)
- Go into or be upon the lands within the Restricted Area without possessing a permit specifically exempting the act. 36 C.F.R. § 261.53(a)(b)(c)(f)
EXEMPTIONS:
Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 26 I.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this order.
- I. Any person with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission.
- 2. Any federal, state, or local officer or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
This Order will be in effect May 1, 2019 and will remain in effect until rescinded.
