Current Conditions

The White River NF is in Winter Travel Season: November 23-May 20
Contact the office of the Ranger District you plan to visit for specific questions and on-the-ground updates.

Find your Ranger District:

  • Aspen-Sopris Ranger District (Aspen, Roaring Fork Valley)
  • Blanco Ranger District (Meeker, Flat Tops NW)
  • Dillon Ranger District (Summit County area)
  • Eagle-Holy Cross Ranger District (Vail, Eagle, Flat Tops SE)
  • Rifle Ranger District (Rifle, New Castle, Glenwood Springs areas)

The Travel Management Plan designates the winter travel system under three categories:
1) Open Areas are those areas where over-snow travel is permitted without restriction, as long as resources are not damaged.
2) Restricted Areas are those where over-snow travel is permitted only on designated routes.
3) In Closed Areas, over-snow motorized travel is not permitted.

Winter Motor Vehicle Use Maps  (MVUMs) are free and available online and at White River National Forest offices. These maps show forest areas that are designated as open, closed, or restricted to over-snow vehicles, as well as plowed routes open to wheeled vehicles. Winter MVUMs also include seasonal closures. It is your responsibility to know where you can go, and the MVUM is your key resource.
