Brave the Elements
Stay Safe this Winter
Be Aware
Recreating in avalanche terrain means making responsible decisions about travel routes based on current snow and weather conditions:

Get the Avalanche Forecast: before you venture out, get the forecast from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center
Get the Gear: always carry a beacon, probe and shovel- and know how to use them!
Get the Training: take an online awareness program on Know Before You Go or a field-based class.
Travel Safely
Transportation accidents are the leading cause of death in winter storms:

Prepare your vehicle for the winter season and know how to react if stranded.
Plan your route: navigation apps may show roads that aren't plowed or appropriate for passenger vehicles.
Motor Vehicle Use Maps help you find safe and legal routes.

Plan Ahead
Responsible winter recreation requires planning, flexibility and respect for other visitors.

Choose terrain that is appropriate for the skill level of the least experienced member of your party.
Be prepared for changing weather and snow conditions.
Carpool when possible, to minimize congestion at trailheads.
Be flexible: have contingency plans in place
Be considerate and ethical: Leave No Trace
