Elephant Head Climbing Area
Elephant Head is a seldom used rock climbing area on the western edge of the Santa Rita Mountains just about an hour south of Tucson. This prominent rock formation reaches heights above 1000 feet and offers adventurous climbing to those who seek a challenge.
There are several climbing routes ascending the north, west, and south sides of Elephant Head, but routefinding may be difficult due to the minimal use of the area. More information can be found at Mountain Project: Elephant Head to help inform your climbing adventure.
Nearby Madera Canyon provides opportunities for camping at Proctor Road Dispersed Camping Area or Bog Springs Campground. Please refer to the Nogales and Sierra Vista Motor Vehicle Use Map (back) for additional dispersed camping opportunities in the vicinity. Always follow Dispersed Camping Best Practices.
There are no amenities at Elephant Head. Bring plenty of water and practice Leave No Trace principles.

Directions
From Tucson, drive I-19 south to exit 56 (Canoa Rd.)near Green Valley. Exit left and drive south on the east frontage road to Elephant Head Rd. Turn left and follow this road through several curves and turns. When it turns to dirt, keep going. At 1.5 miles, take the left fork of the road thru a gate. Drive another 0.4 miles and take a right at crossroad that leads into wash. Park when the road gets really bad. This approach should place you just below the south face. A high clearance vehicle is definitely recommended for this drive.
