About the Area

The Kaibab National Forest is divided into three ranger districts, each located in distinct areas and offering diverse opportunities and experiences. The North Kaibab Ranger District, along with the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, encompasses the beautiful high country of the Kaibab Plateau.

This sky island affords visitors the chance to take a scenic drive on the Kaibab Plateau-North Rim National Scenic Byway, drive to scenic views of Marble and Grand canyons, hike through aspen-ringed meadows, mountain bike along the rim of Grand Canyon, and observe unique wildlife such as the Kaibab squirrel. The district provides camping at DeMotte and Jacob Lake campgrounds, and educational displays at the Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center.

To the south of Grand Canyon, the Williams and Tusayan districts are part of the largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest in the world. The Williams Ranger District is characterized by volcanic hills and mountains and includes four lakes – White Horse, Kaibab, Dogtown and Cataract – that provide opportunities for fishing, camping, hiking and biking. A multi-agency visitor center with an interactive exhibit room is located in Williams.

The Tusayan Ranger District is characterized by the Coconino Rim and Red Butte. Its more gradual changes in elevation make it ideal for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, scenic driving and wildlife viewing.

Portions of Historic Route 66, the Arizona Trail and the Great Western Trail run through the south Kaibab. The Grand Canyon Railway operates daily train rides through the forest from Williams to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim.

Full service communities near the North Kaibab Ranger District include Fredonia, Ariz., and Kanab, Utah. Full service communities near the Williams and Tusayan districts include Williams, Tusayan, Cameron and Flagstaff, Arizona.
