Big Springs Trail #51

A steep 1.3 mile trail that goes between the Big Springs cabins and the fire lookout tower. On the lower end, you can park at the Big Springs administrative site and on the upper end parking is available near the lookout tower.

Trailhead/Starting Points

Lower trailhead: Big Springs Administrative Site on Forest Road 22

Upper trailhead: Big Springs Lookout Tower on Forest Road 454

Parking

Limited parking available at Big Springs Administrative Site and at Big Springs Lookout Tower.

Directions

For Big Springs Administrative Site trailhead (approximately 29 miles): 

  • (From Fredonia) South on US Highway 89A for 1.4 miles,
  • turn right on Forest Road 22 and follow for approximately 27.6 miles to Big Spring Administrative Site.

For Big Springs Lookout Tower trailhead (approximately 22.8 miles):

  • (From Jacob Lake) South on US Highway 67 for 8.5 miles,
  • turn right on Forest Road 212 and follow for approximately 5.5 miles,
  • turn left on Forest Road 230C and follow for approximately 2 miles,
  • turn slight right onto Forest Road 462A and follow for approximately 0.3 miles to merge with Forest Road 462F,
  • continue on Forest Road 462F for approximately 1.5 miles,
  • turn slight right onto Forest Road 429 and follow for approximately 1.2 miles,
  • continue straight onto Forest Road 454 and follow for approximately 3.7 miles to Big Springs Lookout Tower.
