Natural Resources
The Caribou-Targhee National Forest is a treasure trove of natural resources, carefully stewarded through dedicated programs that keep its ecosystems thriving. Our Fisheries Program nurtures world-class waters, sustaining native fish like cutthroat trout for anglers and healthy aquatic habitats. The Watershed Program restores and protects rivers and streams, ensuring clean water flows for wildlife, fish, and visitors alike. Through the Soil and Air Program, we safeguard rich volcanic soils and crisp mountain air, fostering a balanced environment from the ground up. Meanwhile, our Non-Native Invasive Weeds Program battles aggressive invaders like cheatgrass, preserving native plants and habitats across the forest. On the industrial side, our Phosphate Mining efforts responsibly tap into southeast Idaho’s rich deposits to support local economies, while CERCLA initiatives tackle legacy mine cleanup, restoring lands and waters impacted by past extraction. Together, these programs weave a web of care, keeping Caribou-Targhee’s natural resources vibrant and resilient.
