Montpelier Ranger District plans prescribed fire in the Strawberry Canyon area
Project will improve health and resilience of National Forest Lands
Starting May 5 through May 31, the Montpelier Ranger District plans to ignite a 503-acre prescribed burn in the Strawberry Canyon area, 15 miles west of Montpelier, ID. Ignition of the Strawberry Canyon burn units on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest will proceed when weather and fuel conditions are favorable. Smoke may be noticeable from the Preston and Montpelier areas and limited to the tri-county area of Bear Lake, Franklin and Caribou, particularly in the vicinity of Strawberry and Emigration Canyons.
This burn unit is part of the Strawberry Canyon Vegetation Enhancement Project. The purpose of this project is to improve the overall health and resilience of forests in the landscape by reducing tree density and accumulated fuels, while shifting species composition and age-class structure toward desired conditions.
Fire activity may be present along Highway 36 from mile marker 18 to mile marker 21. Signing along Highway 36 in the affected area will notify the public when prescribed burn operations are in progress. Residents may experience smoke during the prescribed burns. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road. Go to https://fire.airnow.gov/ for more detailed information about air quality.
