Mallard Bay Overflow Rec Site

Overview
The Mallard Bay Overflow Rec site is a camping area next to Fish Lake, located near the Fishlake Scenic Byway in central Utah at 9,000 feet in elevation. The camping area is used as an overflow area when all other campgrounds in the Fish Lake Basin are full and only opens when necessary.

Natural Features
Features expansive scenic views of Fish Lake and has forested terrain nearby. Fish Lake is Utah's largest natural mountain lake, covering 2,500 acres.

Recreation
Fish Lake is famous for its 20–40-pound Mackinaw Lake trout. Anglers also enjoy fishing for rainbow trout and splake. Boating, canoeing, swimming and scuba diving are popular activities. The five-mile Pelican Canyon Trail begins at nearby Bowery Creek Campground. It leads through meadows and dense forests of spruce, pine and aspen as it climbs to the 11,633-foot Fish Lake Hightop. The popular Lakeshore National Recreation Trail lines the eastern side of the lake. Hikers are rewarded with stunning lake views after climbing 900 feet elevation.

General Information

May - October

This overflow area is only open when all of the camp sites in all of the campgrounds at Fish Lake are full.

-Please refrain from cutting or breaking branches around dispersed campsites. Kindly bring your own firewood to help preserve the natural environment and camping experience.

-Camping stay limit is 16 days, 15 nights. After that you must relocate at least 5 road miles away if you wish to continue camping.

-Camp at least 200 feet from lakes, rivers and streams to protect water quality.

-Follow local fire restrictions and fully extinguish campfires before leaving.

-Pack out all trash and follow leave no trace principles.

-Use designated vault toilet to protect natural environment and wildlife.

-Use existing sites and park only on durable surfaces (not vegetation)

-Avoid creating new trails or campsites

-Store food properly in bear-proof containers.

-Stay on designated roads, and trails as shown on kiosk and designated forest service maps.

-All OHVs are required to be registered and display a permit or sticker for riding on public lands.

-Yield to hikers, horses and non-motorized users.

Fees are subject to change seasonally. 

Please Note: All campgrounds on the Fishlake National Forest are managed by High Country Recreation under the terms and conditions of a concession permit that was issued to them by the Forest Service in 2020.

The Mallard Bay Overflow Campground is located 40 miles east of Richfield, Utah. Head east on UT-118 N/E 300 N toward N 100 E 0.8 mi. Continue straight onto UT-119 E 8.8 miles. Turn right onto UT-24 E for 23.1 miles then turn left onto UT-25 N 7 miles. Turn right on Doctor Creek Campground Road and travel 0.3 miles. Click the link below for directions.
