Why Purchasing a Pass Locally Matters

The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (REA) (16 U.S.C. 6801-6814) requires at least 80% of the fees to stay on the forests and grasslands where they were collected and reinvest that money to support local site operations and maintenance. 

The fee revenue is used for the repair, maintenance, and facility enhancement directly related to visitor enjoyment, visitor access, and health and safety at recreation fee sites.

Self-Service Pay Stations- "Iron Rangers"

Some sites have self-service fee envelopes available. 

Instructions: 

  1. Complete fee envelope sections
  2. Enclose payment and detach stub
  3. Seal envelope and deposit in tube
  4. Display stub in vehicle

 

Automated Fee Machines

  2. Choose pass type
  3. Follow directions given
  4. Display stub in your vehicle

How To Display Your Pass On Site

• Printed digital pass: Place the printed copy on your dashboard.
• Physical pass: Put it on your dashboard or hang it from your rearview mirror. If you are concerned about leaving your physical pass out, see the next item.
• Digital pass on your phone: Write your reservation number on a piece of paper and place it on your dashboard. Some locations offer fee envelopes or digital pass slips you can use. You can also add your digital pass to your Recreation.gov account and print a copy before your visit.

A few things to note: 

America the Beautiful Pass
• Issued to one person, who must be present with photo ID.
• Covers the pass holder and all passengers in the vehicle.
• Not valid in Mill Creek Canyon.
• Some concessionaire-operated sites accept certain America the Beautiful Passes—check with the camp host.

Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest Passes
• Cover the pass holder and all passengers in the vehicle.
• Valid only at Forest Service recreation sites within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.
• Not valid in Mill Creek Canyon or in concessionaire-operated campgrounds and day-use sites.
