Chilao Visitor Center

Elevation: 5,100-feet 

Amenities: Self-guided trails with exhibits. Vault toilets (non-flush) are located across the road in the Chilao Picnic Area. Trash receptacle available. No water available at visitor center. 

Hiking: Access to multiple trails--

  • Silver Moccasin National Recreation Trail is within a half-mile of the visitor center. Dirt trail
  • National Forest Trail - very short paved trail with exhibits, which leads to the West Fork Cabin
  • Gabrieleño Trail - short paved trail with exhibits about historic Native American use of the forest
  • Creekside Trail - 1/4-mile dirt trail with outdoor exhibits
  • Hiking trail - 1/4-mile dirt trail with exhibits that help you learn how to time your hiking speed, slight elevation gain.

Wildlife-viewing: Popular site for bird-watching

Programs: Programs and activities may be arranged by reservation--call 626-796-5541 (weekends) or (661) 269-2808 (weekdays).

Office Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays

Passes are not required to park at the visitor center.

Know Fire & Other Restrictions Before You Go!: These conditions can affect your entire trip. For example, Extreme and Critical fire use restrictions mean no campfires and no portable cooking systems/stoves. Bring cold food and no S'mores.
