Please be aware of these alerts and notices because many unexpected situations can present difficult challenges for forest visitors.
Be well informed and prepared for your next visit to the forest.
Before venturing out, contact the nearest Forest Service office for recent information on alerts, advisories, notices and closures.
To report an emergency, please call 911.
Road conditions throughout the Angeles National Forest, which includes the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, can change suddenly due to weather conditions or fire activity. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially for mudslides, fallen rocks, debris flows, and landslides. Know more about local road conditions before you go. Tire chains or cables may be required from mid-fall through early spring.
Did you know?...Major roads in the Angeles National Forest are managed and maintained by other agencies--not the U.S. Forest Service.

The USDA Forest Service does manage smaller roads within the Angeles National Forest. Some forest roads are known by their name and/or road number (e.g., 3N17 is also known as Santa Clara Divide Road).
Roads in the forest may close for public safety at any time with little or no notice.
The following links provide weather information and forecasts generated by the National Weather Service. These forecasts are updated regularly.
Most major roads in or immediately adjacent to edges of the Angeles National Forest are not managed or maintained by the USDA Forest Service, please read "Road Conditions" for information on county and city roads.
Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Roads
- Use of a high-clearance vehicle and 4-wheel drive is highly recommended. However, 2x2 vehicles are allowed.
- Each driver must obtain his own permit w/combination. Please provide a current driver’s license and a vehicle registration for each vehicle.
You may obtain your permit at the following locations:
- San Gabriel Canyon Off-Highway Vehicle Area, Sat & Sun from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. - (626) 910-1235.
- San Gabriel Mountains National Monument District office,located in Glendora - (626) 335-1251.
RINCON/SHORTCUT ROAD UPDATE:
Rincon/Shortcut Road is closed to all access until further notice.
When open, a permit is required to access the road. Please read the Rincon/Shortcut Rules and Regulations prior to obtaining a permit.
Respect road closures. Unless otherwise marked, closed roads are open to non–motorized transportation (hiking, walking, biking, & horseback-riding). Use extreme caution. Stay aware of your surroundings.
Additional areas (not listed on Forest Service Road Closures / Storm Damage may have storm-damage). If you enter, you do so at your own risk.

- Angeles Crest Highway/Hwy 2:
- CLOSED FROM ISLIP SADDLE TO VINCENT GAP.
- Angeles Forest Highway/N3: OPEN.
- Big Tujunga Canyon Road: OPEN.
- Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road: CLOSED. From Angeles Forest Highway to Angeles Crest Highway
- Mt. Wilson Road: CLOSED. Only open to emergency vehicle
- Red Box Road: CLOSED.
- Sand Canyon: OPEN
- 3N17 is closed from Mill Creek to the Angeles Crest Christian camp.
- Big Pines Highway/N4: OPEN.
- Maxwell Truck Trail (7N08): CLOSED
- Powerhouse Cut-off (5N16) has been repaired and is now accessible.
- Knapp Ranch Road/7N22: CLOSED
- Sawmill-Liebre Rd (7N23): CLOSED
- Chantry Flat Rd: CLOSED
- Chaney Trail Rd: CLOSED

- Santa Clara Divide Rd (3N17) from Bear Divide to Mill Creek
- Moody Road/4N33: CLOSED (when weather and road conditions allow). (Suitable for high clearance vehicles).
- Indian Canyon Road/4N37: CLOSED (when weather and road conditions allow)
- 7N23 between Atmore and the Old Ridge Route (7N23 East is now open and Sawmill Campground is accessible)
- Old Ridge Route/Old 99/8N04: (Hike-in only). CLOSED TO VEHICLE TRAFFIC.
