Abandoned Laguna Air Force Base project
In 1981 The United States Air Force stopped operating a radar facility on Laguna Mountain on the Cleveland National Forest. Since that time the abandoned buildings have deteriorated severely due to the effects of exposure to the weather and as a result of high level of vandalism. Remaining structures on the site are considered to be a risk to public health and safety due to the presence of asbestos and the potential for neglected buildings to collapse. In addition, evidence exists that the abandoned facility may be used in drug related activities and that transients are living on the site. The Descanso Ranger District proposes to remove buildings, hazardous materials, and other components of the abandoned Laguna Air Force Base and restore the landscape to a naturally functioning condition.
