    This forest order prohibits campfires in portions of Ansel Adams and John Muir Wilderness Areas that are located on the Inyo National Forest, as shown on Exhibit B.

ANSEL ADAMS AND JOHN MUIR WILDERNESS AREAS
CAMPFIRE RESTRICTIONS 

Pursuant to 16 USC § 551 and 36 CFR § 261.50(a), and to protect natural resources, the following acts are prohibited within those portions of the Ansel Adams and John Muir Wilderness Areas that are located on the Inyo National Forest, as shown on Exhibit B. This Order is effective from July 18, 2023 through July 18, 2025. 

  1. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire above 10,000 feet in elevation north of the Mt. Emerson and Mt. Humphreys ridgeline (Township 8 South, Range 30 East, Sections 10, 15, 22, 23, and 24), as shown on Exhibit C.  36 CFR § 261.52(a).
  2. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire above 10,400 feet in elevation south of the Mt. Emerson and Mt. Humphreys ridgeline, as shown on Exhibit D.   36 CFR § 261.52(a).
  3. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire in the areas described in Exhibit A and shown on Exhibits E through S.  36 CFR § 261.52(a). 

Pursuant to 36 CFR § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order: 

  1. Persons with a permit from the Forest Service specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission.
  2. Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
  3. Persons with a valid Wilderness Permit or California Campfire Permit are not exempt from the prohibitions listed above. However, persons with a valid Wilderness Permit or California Campfire Permit issued by the Forest Service may use a portable lantern or stove using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel on the Inyo National Forest. 

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 CFR § 261, Subpart A.   

A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.  16 USC § 551 and 18 USC § 3559, 3571, and 3581.
