INYO NATIONAL FOREST
Stay Limits, Parking and Developed Recreation Site Use


Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50{a), and to protect natural resources and promote public safety, the following acts are prohibited within the Inyo National Forest. This Order is effective from July 3, 2023, through July 3, 2025.

  1. Camping, as described below. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(a). 

    a. In a developed campground for a period longer than specified in Exhibit A.
    b. Within a I 0-mile radius of any one undeveloped campsite for a period longer than 14 consecutive days.
    c. Anywhere within the Inyo National Forest for more than 28 total days during a calendar year.

  2. Camping within an Inyo National Forest Recreation Restriction Area, except within the campsites located in developed campgrounds or in the posted overflow areas. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(e).
  3. Entering or using a developed recreation site or portion thereof when posted closed 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(b).
  4. Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire within an Inyo National Forest Recreation Restriction Area, except within the facilities provided for that purpose in a Developed Recreation Site. 36 C.F.R. § 261.52(a).
  5. Possessing or storing any food or refuse within a Developed Recreation Site except in a container designed to prevent access by bears or other wildlife. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(cc).
  6. Occupying an individual campsite with more than six people or a group campsite with more than the posted group size limit. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(t).
  7. Possessing, parking or leaving more than two vehicles, except motorcycles or bicycles, per camp unit within a Developed Recreation Site. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(i).
  8. Parking or leaving a vehicle in violation of posted instructions within a Developed Recreation Site. 36 C .F .R. § 261.5 8(g).


Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:

  1. Persons with a Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order) specifically exempting them from this Order.
  2. Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting
    force in the performance of an official duty.


These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 C.F.R. Part 26 I, Subpart A.


A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or$ I 0,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. 16 U.S.C. § 55 1 and 18 U.S.C. §§ 3559, 357 1, and 3581.
