Bishop, Calif., June 26, 2025 – The Dry Fire was reported at 4:19 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, located just southwest of the Caltrans Crestview Rest Stop, south of Owens River Road and north of Mammoth Scenic Loop Road. Initial behavior included ground fire and group tree torching with slow to moderate rates of spread in sagebrush and timber, producing a highly visible smoke plume. However, due to the quick work of ground and air firefighting resources, the forward rate of spread was stopped approximately four hours later at 8:38 p.m. and 15 acres.

Firefighters worked overnight, constructing and reinforcing control lines and mopping up the fire perimeter. By 11:00 a.m. this morning, the incident commander declared the fire 30% contained.

Infrastructure threatened in the area included Highway 395 and a high voltage powerline, however the power lines were not impacted. Adjacent to the fire are multiple mechanical and prescribed fire treatments done recently that aided in the suppression of this fire.

Highway 395 was temporarily closed in both directions yesterday, however it was reopened at 9 p.m after the forward spread was stopped. Due to continued firefighting operations, the southbound right (slow) lane on Highway 395 remains closed between Deadman Road south to the Mammoth Scenic Loop for safety.

There are no forest or road closures in effect, however it is advised that OHV users and other recreationists avoid the area for the next few days.

At the height of the incident yesterday, approximately 174 personnel were on scene, including:

  • 12 Fixed wing aircraft: 8 air tankers, with 4 tactical and Aerial Supervisors
  • 3 Rotor wing aircraft: 1 Type 3 and 2 Type 1 helicopters
  • 4 Hand crews
  • 12 Engines and 6 Water tenders

Firefighting resources from the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, CAL FIRE and nearby local government cooperators from Mammoth Lakes Fire Department, Long Valley Fire Department, and an Inyo County strike team comprised of Bishop, Big Pine, Lone Pine, and Independence Volunteer Fire Departments all responded to the incident to assist.

Evacuations were not issued. This fire is under investigation.
