Bishop, Calif., May 07, 2025—Inyo National Forest, Mt. Whitney Ranger District is implementing a seasonal area closure until the end of June for Monache Meadows to prevent permanent road damage, protect water quality and aquatic habitats, and improve overall public access.

This order applies to all motorized wheeled use, including trucks, off highway vehicles, dirt bikes, and airplanes. However, it includes access exemptions for administrative entities, permittees, and landowners during the closure period. Limited travel across these roads does not pose the same potential for damage as full public access, and a new gate will be installed shortly on Forest Road 20S03 to support this.

“This seasonal closure will prevent sections of road from becoming impassable and will also improve safety by reducing the number of people getting stranded and needing rescue,” said acting Mt. Whitney District Ranger Wilfred Nabahe.

“Improving the stability of these roads will allow for a better overall experience for those seeking to enjoy the Monache Meadows area, while protecting natural resources.”

Inyo National Forest intends to monitor road and trail conditions and will modify closure dates based on conditions and readiness.

The opening date in the order is based on the firmness of the soil. When the ground is dry enough to support vehicle travel without significant resource damage the area will be opened.

Going forward, the closure dates for the Monache Meadows area can be anticipated to be December 1 through June 30, depending on moisture levels.
