Camping and Cabins

Camping and cabin rental opportunities in a variety of settings are abundant on the National Forests in California.

Visit Recreation.gov for US Forest Service campsites, cabins and lookouts available for reservation.

Developed Campgrounds

At many locations the Forest Service provides developed facilities for camping. Developed campgrounds may include a variety of facilities, such as restrooms, potable water, picnic tables, and garbage cans. However, many campgrounds do not have all of these amenities. Make sure to check the forest website or call the closest office when planning your trip.

Permits, Fees and Limitations:

Most Forest Service campgrounds require a fee to use the campground. These fees help maintain the facilities.

Many campgrounds and group campgrounds require a reservation be made at least 48 hours in advance and can be made at www.recreation.gov. Sometimes campsites are selected on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Please obey all posted rules specific to the campground you are staying at and keep the following in mind:

  • Camping stay limits vary by location, but are generally 7-14 days.
  • Due to adverse weather, many campgrounds are only seasonally available. Make sure to check if the campground is open before planning your trip.

Dispersed Camping

Camping on public lands away from developed recreation facilities is referred to as dispersed camping. This camping is for the more rugged individuals who are willing to stay overnight without leaving behind any indication of their stay. Those who are willing to keep the wheels of their vehicle on or near the road, pack out their trash, ensure they abide by fire restrictions, overnight stay limitations, and not leave evidence of their presence behind are welcome.
