    To provide for public safety and protect natural resources, the acts listed in the forest order are prohibited within the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area.

Forest Order

Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(a) and (b), and to provide for public safety and protect natural resources, the following acts are prohibited within the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area within the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, Six Rivers National Forest, and Klamath National Forest. This Order is effective from September 19, 2025, through September 19, 2028.


1. Entering or being in the Wilderness Areas as part of a group that includes more than 10 persons. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(f).
2. Possessing or using a bicycle, wagon, cart, or other mechanized mode of travel.
36 CFR § 261.57(h).
3. Camping within the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area any time of year without a valid wilderness permit. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(e).
4. Camping for more than 14 nights within a 30-day period, starting with the first night of occupancy. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(a).
5. Disposing of debris, garbage, or other waste. 36 C.F.R. § 261.57(g).
6. Disposing of soap water waste within 200 feet of any water source. 36 C.F.R. § 261.57(g).
7. Depositing of bodily waste within 200 feet of lakes, streams, springs, campsites, or trails. 36 C.F.R. § 261.57(g).
8. Storing or leaving unattended any equipment, personal property or supplies for a period of more than 24 hours. 36 C.F.R. § 261.57(f).
9. Shortcutting a switchback while on a National Forest System trail. 36 C.F.R. § 261.55(e).
10. Hitching, tethering, or hobbling a horse or other saddle or pack animal:
a. To a tree, except while loading and unloading or when traveling.
b. Within 200 feet of a lake, stream, or campsite except while loading or unloading or while traveling.

11. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a wood fire for any purpose within the Trinity Alps Wilderness Campfire Prohibition Areas 1, 2 and 3, as described in Exhibit A and shown on Exhibit B. 36 C.F.R. § 261.52(a).
12. Storing any food or refuse, unless placed in a bear-proof canister in the Canyon Creek and Swift Creek drainage areas, as shown on Exhibit C. In all other areas, any bear-proof system designed to prevent access by bears must be used. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(cc).
 

Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:


1. Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from the Order.
2. Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire-fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
3. Persons with a valid California Campfire Permit are not exempt from the prohibitions listed above. However, persons with a valid California Campfire Permit may use portable stoves using gas, jellied petroleum, or pressurized liquid fuel, with a shut-off valve in locations where wood fires are prohibited.


These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 C.F.R. Part 261, Subpart A.
A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 18 U.S.C. §§ 3559, 3571, and 3581.
