What are cuttings?
Cuttings are parts of plants including beargrass, salal, huckleberries and ferns. If you are looking for entire plants, see transplants.
Tree boughs may be sold for personal use on some Ranger Districts. In addition, some Districts offer large quantities of tree boughs under Commercial Contract.
If you are interested in tree boughs check with the local Ranger District to see if they sell permits for tree boughs.
Free Use
How much does a permit cost?
- Free use permits are free. Get a Free Use Permit for gathering edible ferns online. *ALERT: The online permit system is not compatible with Internet Explorer. Please consider other browser options.
How many cuttings may I collect?

Where can I gather cuttings?
- The gathering of cuttings is prohibited inside the Legislated Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Wilderness Areas, Research Natural Areas, Experimental Forests and other administratively closed areas. Check with local Ranger District Office for other restrictions.
Other Restrictions
- Cuttings gathered with a Free Use permit may not be sold or traded. If you wish to sell cuttings, see cuttings commercial contracts below.
