Horse Camp: Kalama

Kalama Horse Camp is located just outside the west boundary of Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. 27 sites accommodate primarily equestrian users, with nearby access to trails for horseback riding, hiking and biking. Sixteen reservable campsites are for equestrians with trailers only. There are ten first come, first serve, standard non-equestrian sites, and one host site. There are several horse manure bins as well throughout the camp.

The campground loop trail allows easy access to the main trailhead which accesses Toutle Trail #238, Cinnamon Trail #204 & Fossil Trail #242 . A trailhead parking area, found at the east end of the campground provides parking for day use. Over 50 miles of trails and closed roads are available from the campground.

No potable water at this site. Water is suitable for horses only.

Alert: During the shoulder season, early spring and late fall, there is NO garbage service at this facility. Be prepared to pack out all garbage.

Current Conditions
03/04/25: Kalama Horse Camp is closed for the season. We anticipate a May opening date. Trail #204 Cinnamon Trail and #242A Kalama Falls Trail, which depart from the horse camp trailhead, remain closed due to fire damage. Forest Road 81 may be snow covered into April. Snow may also cover many of the trails from the camp like Toutle Trail. Trails may not be cleared of any fallen trees from winter damage, so please use caution. Contact Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument for more information at 360-449-7800 and press option 0 to reach the front desk.
