Sno-Park: Smith Butte

In a mature and varied forest setting interspersed with mountain meadows and geographic features, this park is near the Mt. Adams Wilderness. Here visitors will find access to trails leading to remote forest lakes, high-mountain elevations and some of the most spectacular country found anywhere.

Note: Smith Butte Sno-Park is open intermittently as dictated by funds and snow pack.  There are no signed or groomed trails. This is a joint use facility for both motorized and non-motorized users.  Snowmobile use may occur on Aiken Lava Bed.

General Information

A valid Washington State Sno-Park Permit is required December 1 to March 31. Sno-Park permits are available to purchase online and also at Ashford Valley Grocery in Ashford, Trout Lake Grocery in Trout Lake and the Chelatchie Prairie General Store in Amboy. 

  • Sno-park permits help pay for snow removal, trail grooming, sanitation facilities, mapping, trail signs, safety education, enforcement and program administration.

Motorized vehicles are not allowed in nearby Mt. Adams Wilderness (above Aiken Lava Bed).

  • Violations of 36 CFR 261 may result in confiscation of equipment, fines up to $5,000.00, and/or six months in jail.

Directions

From Stevenson, WA, take State Route 14 east for about 14 miles to Alt. Highway 141. Follow Highway 141 for about 23 miles to Trout Lake, WA. In Trout Lake, WA veer right and head north on Mt. Adams Recreation Road (at the gas station). Follow Mount Adams Road north then stay straight on Forest Road 82 and follow for about another 4 miles.
