Firefighter and public safety continue to remain a top priority. Firefighters are engaging the fire utilizing direct and indirect suppression tactics having provided for safety first. A full suppression strategy is being utilized and personnel are committed to minimizing the size of the fire while also planning for contingency actions should this fire grow. Falling rocks, steep terrain and heavy fuel loading make this fire area extremely dangerous and it difficult to access the fire directly. A helicopter is being used to reduce the fires spread and provide logistical support.
Operations: All actions available to safely engage this fire are being taken. The public can expect to see a helicopter working in the area periodically as firefighters work to suppress the fire, balancing the need for water bucket drops with the risk of potentially increasing the fire size by pushing it down the slope, and providing logistical support. Personnel are also working to construct indirect contingency lines around nearby structures and private property.
Safety: Public traveling along the Mountain Loop Highway can expect to see firefighters working in the area of the Bedal Campground and may see smoke from the fire as you get close to the fire area. Firefighters are fighting the fire as safely and aggressively as they can given the difficulty in accessing the fire due to the steep rugged terrain and location of the fire more than mid-way up the mountain. There is no immediate threat to structures or the nearby communities. The fire is being managed by the Darrington Ranger District along with DNR to minimize the size and duration of the fire while providing for firefighter and public safety.
Closures/Restrictions: Due to dry conditions and high fire danger, campfire restrictions are in effect across the Forest. For more information visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/mbs/alerts. Call 911 to report smoke or new wildfires.
