Weden Creek (Gothic Basin) Trail 724

This old miner’s trail begins at about 2,300-feet elevation and climbs steeply to about 5,000 feet in 3.3 miles. Starting in timber, follow a series of steep switchbacks crossing several creeks. As the forest vegetation gives way to subalpine rock and heather, the trail becomes more challenging. The steep terrain offers fine views of the valley and surrounding peaks. You will see various remnants of the mining days as you ascend toward one of the most spectacularly beautiful spots in the area. The trail crosses potentially dangerous snow gullies and the upper section and basin can remain snow-covered into early September.

The trail ends at 19.7-acre Foggy Lake where mountaineers gain access to climb Del Campo and Gothic Peaks. The lake is 35-feet deep, barren of fish and often frozen all year long. Before reaching Gothic Basin the trail becomes more of a rock scramble as you enter the Morning Star Natural Resources Conservation Area. Managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources this NRCA protects sensitive plant communities, high quality wetlands and fragile sub alpine meadows including several species of rare subalpine flowers. Only low impact uses are allowed. Please stay on trails, snow or rock to avoid damaging these fragile treasures. Camping is allowed in the basin and surrounding area, but campfires are prohibited. Please use care in selecting campsite and practice “Leave No Trace” techniques.
