There is a fire closure in place surrounding the Austin and The Narrows Fires on the Clackamas River Ranger District. The order was updated Wednesday, September 16, 2026 and is in place for the safety of forest users & firefighting personnel as well as the protection of natural resources.

Austin and Narrows Fire Closure

Pursuant to 16 USC § 551 and 36 CFR 261.50 (a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited on the Clackamas River Ranger Districts of the Mt. Hood National Forest as shown on the attached map (Exhibit A). These prohibitions will become effective September 16th, 2026, and will remain in effect until December 31, 2026, or until updated or rescinded.

Going into or being upon National Forest System lands, roads, or trails within the fire closure area.

Going onto or being within an area closed for public health and safety. 36 CFR § 261.53 (e)
Being upon a closed road. 36 CFR § 261.54 (e)
Being on a closed trail. 36 CFR § 261.55 (a)

CLOSURE DESCRIPTION:

As depicted in Exhibit A, all National Forest System lands, roads, and trails administered by the Mt. Hood National Forest, Clackamas River Ranger District, within the following boundary, are closed:

Fire Closure Area – Northern Boundary

The northern boundary begins at the intersection of Oregon Route (OR) 224 and Forest Service Road (FSR) 5700. The boundary continues along FSR 5700 east to its intersection with FSR 5740, closing all roads south of.

Fire Closure Area – Eastern Boundary

The eastern boundary begins at the intersection of FSR 5700 and FSR 5740. The boundary continues south, closing all roads and trails to the west, to the intersection with FSR 5740.260. The boundary continues east on FSR 5740.260, closing all roads and trails to the south of to the intersection with FSR 5740.261. The boundary continues north on FSR 5740.261, closing all roads south and east of, to the intersection of 5740.030. The boundary continues south on FSR 5740.030, closing all roads and trails south of, to the intersection with FSR 4200. The boundary follows FSR 4200 south, closing all roads and trails west of, to the intersection with FSR 4200.140. The boundary continues along FSR 4200.140, closing all roads west and north of, to the intersection with FSR 4680. The boundary continues north along FSR 4680, closing all roads and trails north of, to the intersection with FSR 46. The boundary continues south along FSR 4600, closing all roads and trails to the west of, to the intersection with the Clackamas/Marin County boundary.

Fire Closure Area – Southern Boundary

The southern boundary begins at the intersection of FSR 4600 with the Clackamas/Marin County boundary. The boundary continues west along the Clackamas/Marin County boundary closing all roads and trails north of to the intersection with the East Fork of the Collawash River.

Fire Closure Area – Western Boundary

The western boundary begins at the intersection of the Clackamas/Marin County boundary and the East Fork of the Collawash River. The boundary continues north on an azimuth of approximately 334 degrees 51 minutes to the intersection of FSR 6380 and FSR 6380.120, closing all roads and trails east of. The boundary continues north along FSR 6380, closing all roads and trails east of, to the intersection of FSR 6300. The Boundary continues north, closing all roads and trails east of to the intersection with FSR 7000. The boundary continues north on FSR 6300 to FSR 6300.160, closing all roads and trails east of. The boundary continues on FSR 6300.160 to its intersection with FSR 6300, closing all roads and trails east of. The boundary continues north to the intersection with FSR 4600, closing all roads and trails east of. The boundary continues north on FSR 4600 to the intersection with FSR 5700, closing all roads and trails east of.

The closure applies to all National Forest System lands within the described boundary.

The closure does not apply to private or state inholdings.

Being on any National Forest System road, and associated spur roads, within the Fire Closure Area, as shown on the attached map (Exhibit A) including but not limited to those listed below. 36 C.F.R. § 261.54(e).

EXEMPTIONS:

Pursuant to Title 36 CFR 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this order:

Any person with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission.
Any Federal, State, or local official or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official duty.
Owners or lessees of land within the closed area.

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 CFR part 261, subpart A.

Violations of these prohibitions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual and $10,000 for an organization or imprisonment for not more than six (6) months, or both. [16 USC § 551, 18 USC §§ 3551, 3559, 3571, and 3581].
