Working for Mt. Hood National Forest

Located 50 miles east of Portland, Oregon, Mt. Hood National Forest covers 1.1 million acres, stretching from the Columbia River Gorge to the Mount Jefferson Wilderness. The Forest is known for its namesake, Mt. Hood, the tallest mountain in the state. Mt. Hood National Forest offers a range of outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, skiing, and camping. The forest provides critical water resources for the region and is known for its robust fisheries program.

The Forest has four main duty locations:

  • Sandy, OR (Clackamas River Ranger District & Forest Headquarters)
  • Zigzag, OR (Zigzag Ranger District)
  • Dufur, OR (Barlow Ranger District)
  • Parkdale, OR (Hood River Ranger District)

The Pacific Northwest and Alaska Regions have more than 1,500 fire positions spread across the National Forests of Alaska, Oregon and Washington. These positions range from Fire Management Officer to Fuels Specialist to Fire Forestry Technician.
