  • Hazards from Winter Storms

Heavy rains and strong winds have created many hazards across Mt. Hood National Forest and surrounding areas. December storms resulted in downed trees on Forest Roads in addition to localized flooding, landslides, and rockfall. Although the storms have passed, conditions across the Forest are still very unsafe. Multiple trails and recreation sites across the Clackamas River, Hood River, and Zigzag Ranger Districts have been impacted. Some areas aren't accessible at all due to blocked roads.

Forest Service crews are assessing conditions as they can safely do so, but it will take time to understand the full extent of damage. Pay attention to closure/warning signs and prepare for hazardous conditions. Call your local district office for more details.

Burned areas have an increased likelihood of landslides, mudslides, flash floods, and debris flows. Hikers always assume risks when entering trails on the Forest, but in burned areas those risks are greater. Please know the risks and use extreme caution when recreating in burned areas.

ODOT highway closures may be in effect. Please visit TripCheck.com for the most current information on Highways 224, 26, and 35.
