Occupancy and Use in the Umatilla National Forest Wilderness Area
Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and C.F.R. § 261.50(a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited on the area, roads and road segments described on Exhibit A of this Order within the Umatilla National Forest. This Order supersedes Forest Order 2009-0614-UM-02 and is effective on August 21, 2025, through August 31, 2027, unless rescinded sooner.
PROHIBITIONS
- Storing equipment, personal property or supplies. 36 CFR 261.57(f)
- Possessing or using a wagon, cart, or other vehicles. 36 CFR 261.57(h)
- Riding, Hitching, Tethering or hobbling a horse or other saddle or pack-animal in violation of posted instructions. 36 CFR 261.58(aa)
- Entering or being in the wilderness with a group consisting of more than 12 persons or 18 head of pack or saddle stock. 36 CFR 261.58(f)
- Shortcutting a switchback on any trail. 36 CFR 261.55(e)
BOUNDARY AREAS (as depicted on Exhibit A)
The Wilderness boundaries of the Wenaha-Tucannon Area, North Fork Umatilla Wilderness Area, and North Fork John Day Wilderness Area.
EXEMPTIONS
Pursuant to 36 CFR § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this order:
- Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails or Areas Restricted by Regulation order), specifically exempting them from this order.
- Any Federal, State, or local Officer or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in performance of an official duty.
- Forest Service employees performing official duties.
These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 CFR Part 261, Subpart A.
Violation of these prohibitions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. (16 U.S.C. § 551 and 18 U.S.C. §§ 3551, 3559, 3571, and 3581).
