The USDA Forest Service invites outdoor enthusiasts to embrace the arrival of spring with a visit to one of Alabama’s national forests. Whether you enjoy hiking, fishing, biking, swimming, picnicking, target shooting, or camping, the Bankhead, Conecuh, Talladega, or Tuskegee National Forests could be your ideal destination. Contact a Forest Service office to help you plan your trip and remember to recreate responsibly.

Recreation provides the chance to make connections, build relationships, and foster long-term care and stewardship of our natural resources. The Forest Service continues to invest in initiatives to ensure Alabama’s recreation sites are accessible, safe, and enjoyable. Together, we are encouraging everyone to recreate responsibility.

Plenty to explore

The Forest Service manages over 368 designated trails and 28 campgrounds in Alabama’s four national forests. There is plenty to explore and spring is a great time to do so. Always plan ahead, know the rules and think about safety to get the best recreation. The Forest Service manages over 368 designated trails and 28 campgrounds in Alabama’s four national forests. Outdoor recreating in Alabama’s forests is a great way to start an active lifestyle. For more information on recreational activities to get you moving, please see our national forest listing.

Additionally, the Forest Service created the Community Engagement Network (CEN), a platform designed for sharing information and providing visitors with various outdoor recreation opportunities across Alabama's stunning landscapes. The Forest Service is encouraging federal, state, and local organizations, community groups, and individuals to share their outdoor recreation events and sites to add to the National Forests in Alabama CEN community. All events must be free, open to the public, and nature-based. Complete the Forest Service form and contact the Forest Service Public Affairs Department at 334-679-5008 or email CEN Coordinator Tamica.carter@usda.gov for additional information.

National forests and grasslands provide many outdoor recreation opportunities that support mental, physical, cultural, spiritual, and economic benefits. Recreation contributes to a way of life for many people, from families who fish along the same stream for generations to schools that host field trips, so students get outdoors to skiers, from novice to world-class Olympians, who recreate and train on the mountains of America.
