The Forest Service follows NEPA regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under this rule, Forest Service officials determine which proposed projects are shared for public input.

The agency no longer issues a schedule of proposed actions (SOPA) report. Below is the current list of proposed projects available for review—your opportunity to learn more, share feedback, and stay engaged in decisions that shape the future of our public lands.

National Forests in Alabama Projects

The proposal is to implement a salvage timber sale to remove storm damaged timber on approximately 30 acres. The project purpose is to reduce heavy fuel build up, reduce safety hazards and facilitate restoration.

Thinning, restoration and hazardous fuel reduction activities are being proposed to mitigate the extent of the Southern Pine Beetle outbreak which began in the summer of 2023 and continued through 2024 on the Bankhead.

Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire (including charcoal) outside of developed recreation areas. Fires at developed recreation areas must be confined to receptacles designed for fire.

Placement of buried (2) 1.50-inch duct containing 288ct fiber optic cable via plow and directional bore at a depth of 36 inches and a crossing at a depth of 48 inches with handhole placements.

Replace existing septic field lines for the YACC House at the Open Pond Work Center an Administrative Site.

Utilization of FSR 517C to access private land that is surrounded by national forest lands.

Mitigation of the effects of Southern pine beetle infestation.

The proposal is to fell and remove hazardous trees killed by Southern Pine Beetle from the Wolfpen camping area as defined by the interior ~4 acres encircled by road as well as a one-tree buffer on the outside of the road.

Manage southern yellow pine stands to reduce the risk of insect damage, catastrophic wildfire, improve wildlife habitat and restore areas to desired future conditions.

Rapid treatment of up to 3,000 acres annually of damaged areas via commercial and non-commercial timber removal to improve the ability of the district to respond quickly and efficiently to issues created by natural disaster and forest health events.

Provide NEPA support for oil and gas leasing analysis on the Conecuh National Forest for future lease options

Special use to install and maintain an overhead powerline to a private inholding within the Forest.

Covington County Engineers Office requested a permit for the replacement of two (2) bridges with reinforced concrete/steel structures, and Covington Electric Coop has submitted an application to convert overhead powerlines to underground.

A forest order is proposed to meet the goal of public safety and health as related to consumption of alcoholic beverages within select developed recreation areas contained within National Forests in Alabama.

Forest Order is proposed to reduce the potential risk of injury to the visitors, protect the infrastructure as well as the natural recourses in the surrounding area and eliminate camping at these specific sites location.

Prohibit the building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire or campfire anywhere on the National Forests in Alabama. The purpose is for the protection of the public and natural resources.

To meet the goal of public safety and health, and minimize negative impacts to wilderness character, natural resource managers must review the risks associated various activities within Wilderness areas.

Special Use Permit for installation and maintenance of a waterline along Forest Service Road 263.

The proposal is to replace the gangway with new materials and reutilize the existing dock and floats. There are no new ground-disturbing activities proposed with this project.

Update Forest Plan Monitoring Plan to meet requirements of 2012 Planning Rule. This effort will result in an Administrative Change to the Forest Plan and is NOT a NEPA decision. NEPA project webpage used to increase visibility for public convenience.

Proposing to issue a special use permit to Oakcrest Rentals, LLC. for year-round usage and maintenance of two seasonal roads FSR314D & 314E leading to private property. The area is 4,442 feet long and the width is 20 feet or 2.03 acres (.84 miles).

Repair of auxiliary concrete spillway and metal debris rack to fix the internal erosion of soils beneath and beside the spillway that pose a major threat to the long-term viability and continued safe function of the spillway.

Approximately 5000 acres located south of highway 278 will be proposed for treatment to restore longleaf pine woodland habitat on suitable and manageable sites or conduct treatments that places stands on the path of longleaf restoration.

PowerSouth has applied for a special use permit to install an overhead 115v power transmission line from their substation. The proposal is to widen the road right-of-way by 37 feet on the north side of Highway 186. Approximately 2.7 miles (12 acres).

Special use permit for an existing driveway, underground waterline and overhead powerline running from Alabama Highway 33 crossing Bankhead National Forest to private property.

Longleaf Pine ecosystem and associated species restoration, Red-Cockaded Woodpecker habitat improvement, and increase resiliency to natural disasters, invasive species and native insects, such as the Southern Pine Beetle.

Access to a private property inholding in Talladega County, Alabama

Repair of an existing radio base station tower within the same footprint located at an administrative site (Office/Work Center compound)

The USDA Forest Service has proposed the thinning of approx. 10 acres of midstory vegetation to promote the presence of herbaceous plants in the understory and improve the quality of the available habitat for numerous species of interest.

Replace radio repeater tower at an existing administrative site.

The Forest Service is proposing to use commercial sanitation cutting to remove the loblolly pine from these stands to control the SPB infestations and prevent them from moving into adjacent stands.

Update the Tuskegee Upland Pine II EA to change a portion of the project area in Compartment 1 from thinning to clearcut with reserves and reforest longleaf pine on approximately 150 acres in multiple stands.

The Bankhead will manage approximately 7,500 acres within the Upper Capsey, Lower Capsey and Rush watersheds. This project will improve forest structure, composition and function by means of restoration and commercial thinning and associated actions.

Special use permit to install and maintain an underground fiber optic cable within an existing right-of-way along US Highway 29 crossing the Tuskegee National Forest.
