National Forests in Alabama
SOPA Reports
The Schedule of Proposed Actions (SOPA) contains a list of proposed
actions for National Forests in Alabama that will soon begin or are currently undergoing environmental
analysis and documentation. It provides information so that you can become
aware of and indicate your interest in specific proposals. We encourage your
early and ongoing involvement in any proposals of interest to you.
Manage southern yellow pine stands by thinning or clearcutting to reduce the risk of damage by southern pine beetles, reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire, improve wildlife habitat and restore areas to their desired future conditions.
Restore areas impacted by a tornado and southern pine beetle to improve forest health through reducing insect threats and increase resiliency to insect and disease, and to reduce heavy hazardous fuel loadings by removing damaged and at-risk timber.
Rapid treatment of up to 3,000 acres annually of damaged areas via commercial and non-commercial timber removal to improve the ability of the district to respond quickly and efficiently to issues created by natural disaster and forest health events.
Proposes to restore and maintain desired conditions of fire-maintained longleaf pine forest and to improve early successional habitat for wildlife species and enhance recreational opportunities for visitors. The project area is ~9,900 acres.
Special use permit to construct a new driveway and install underground powerline and waterline from Forest Service Road 209 to private lands crossing Bankhead National Forest.
Special use permit for an existing driveway and installation of new underground powerlines and waterlines from Forest Service Road 203 to private lands crossing Bankhead National Forest.
Repair of auxiliary concrete spillway and metal debris rack to fix the internal erosion of soils beneath and beside the spillway that pose a major threat to the long-term viability and continued safe function of the spillway.
Approximately 5000 acres located south of highway 278 will be proposed for treatment to restore longleaf pine woodland habitat on suitable and manageable sites or conduct treatments that places stands on the path of longleaf restoration.
Special use permit for an existing driveway, underground waterline and overhead powerline running from Alabama Highway 33 crossing Bankhead National Forest to private property.
Longleaf Pine ecosystem and associated species restoration, Red-Cockaded Woodpecker habitat improvement, and increase resiliency to natural disasters, invasive species and native insects, such as the Southern Pine Beetle.
Update the Tuskegee Upland Pine II EA to change a portion of the project area in Compartment 1 from thinning to clearcut with reserves and reforest longleaf pine on approximately 150 acres in multiple stands.
The Bankhead will manage approximately 7,500 acres within the Upper Capsey, Lower Capsey and Rush watersheds. This project will improve forest structure, composition and function by means of restoration and commercial thinning and associated actions.
Special use permit to install and maintain an underground fiber optic cable within an existing right-of-way along US Highway 29 crossing the Tuskegee National Forest.
