Welcome to Huron-Manistee National Forest
The Huron-Manistee National Forests cover nearly one million acres in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, between Lakes Michigan and Huron. The forests offer year-round recreation, both motorized and non-motorized. Some of the most popular areas are the trails and campgrounds along four nationally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers: the Pine, Manistee, Au Sable, and Pere Marquette.
A team of specialists—including botanists, biologists, archaeologists, fire staff, and timber and silviculture experts—works together to keep the Forests healthy. Their work includes habitat protection, prescribed burns, timber management, and caring for sensitive and endangered species. The Forests provide essential habitat for species such as the Kirtland’s warbler, piping plover, Karner blue butterfly, and Pitcher’s thistle.
