- All proposed research activities on the Superior National Forest, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, must submit a research application.
- The deadline for submitting research applications is May 1, for activities proposed that calendar year.
- Research applications may take over a month or more to process.
- Researchers should submit a trip plan with their application or as early as possible, prior to planned entry dates into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Reserved, Walk-up and Self-Issue Boundary Waters Canoe Area Permits
- Research within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness requires an entry point permit reservation.
- Permits are required year-round for all day and overnight visits to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
- Different types of permits and related fees may apply, depending on the date, point of entry, mode of travel, and nature of your group.
