Research Applications

All proposed research activities on the Superior National Forest, including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, must submit a research application.
The deadline for submitting research applications is May 1, for activities proposed that calendar year.
Research applications may take over a month or more to process.
Researchers should submit a trip plan with their application or as early as possible, prior to planned entry dates into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Research within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness requires an entry point permit reservation.
Permits are required year-round for all day and overnight visits to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Different types of permits and related fees may apply, depending on the date, point of entry, mode of travel, and nature of your group.
