Seward District Ranger Ruth D’Amico, under authority delegated by the Federal Subsistence Board, is restricting the Unit 7 federal subsistence caribou registration hunt to the harvest of caribou bulls only. The restriction will be effective from 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, to 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025, unless rescinded by a subsequent federal special action.

Based on aerial surveys conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the Kenai Mountains Caribou Herd has suffered a significant decline in population. The State drawing hunt has also been restricted to caribou bulls only. Whether this action is extending through the end of the season, Dec. 31, 2025, is contingent on a public hearing. Information on the forthcoming public hearing will be provided at a later date.

A map and description of the closed areas are available from the Seward Ranger District Office.
