Childs Glacier Campground

There are 11 sites with spectacular views of two nearby glaciers and the historic Million Dollar Bridge. This location is available on a first-come, first-served basis only. 

Copper River and Child’s Glacier trails are located on site and one half mile from site.  Fishing for salmon is available within 10 miles.  Both Brown and Black bears can be seen roaming the banks of the Copper River for fish.

 

Current Conditions
This site is open but no longer has road access. Alternative transportation can be arranged through outfitters and guides.

General Information

Childs Glacier was once accessible by road, but in 2011 the dynamic nature of the Copper River washed out a section of highway at mile 36. Additional road damage occurred in 2018, washing out part of the road at Mile 44. The area is now closed to vehicle access but remains open to the publicOutfitters provide tours and transport to the site.

There are permittees who will take people into the site for a fee:

Childs Glacier Lodge 

Open 24 hours a day 7 days a week May 1 - October 31. Closed November 1 - April 30 during winter due to access.

Eleven campsites are available at $10 per night, and payment can be made at a self-serve fee box located at the main pavilion. 

Forest Service staff maintains the site annually during the summer season.
