About the Area
The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest is in Southwest Montana and straddles both sides of the continental divide. The largest National Forest in Montana—with over 3.4 million acres—the area is home to a vast array of landscapes, flora, and fauna.
The scenery in Southwest Montana is dominated by high alpine peaks and broad, fertile valleys. The valleys provide ample conditions for farmers and ranchers, as well as some of the state’s most prized trout fisheries. High in the peaks above, alpine lakes fill the cirques, providing hikers with spectacular vistas and wildlife viewing.

History
The land was once home to multiple Tribes who lived, hunted, and traded in the area. When Lewis and Clark first explored here looking to cross the continental divide, Sacagawea and her brother Cameahwait helped them cross into what is now Idaho via Lemhi Pass. Part of the Nee-Me-Poo National Historic Trail also crosses through the forest, which commemorates the flight of the Nez Perce from their homeland in 1877.
Fifteen years prior, in 1862, a major gold strike was discovered near what became known as Bannack, the first territorial capitol of Montana. Settlers and miners poured into the region as additional claims were found; many of the area’s towns trace their roots to mining activity in the area, the most famous of which is Butte, MT. Evidence of these early days is preserved in historic sites throughout the region.
