Current Conditions
Whether you're here to hike, camp, fish, hunt, or explore by snowmobile, it's imperative to be aware of current conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Southwest Montana's rugged landscape includes vast valleys and high alpine peaks, where snow can persist into July at higher elevations. Weather changes rapidly--sunny mornings can turn into afternoon thunderstorms, and temperatures can drop unexpectedly.
Always check the forecast before heading out and be prepared for unpredictable conditions.
Many forest roads are gravel and can become impassable due to mud, snow, or seasonal closures. In winter, numerous areas are only accessible by snowmobile, skis, or other over-snow travel. Spring thaw can create hazardous road conditions with washouts and deep mud. High clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles may be recommended during certain times of the year.
Most of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest is extremely remote with little to no cell phone service. Visitors should plan accordingly:
- Carry a map and know your route, or download geo-referenced maps to your phone and carry a charging device. Maps are sold at every ranger station.
- Bring extra food, water, and warm layers.
- Let someone know your plans and expected return time.
- Be prepared for self-rescue in case of an emergency.
Check with local ranger stations for the latest updates on road conditions, fire restrictions, and recreation opportunities. Be prepared, respect the land, and enjoy the incredible beauty of Southwest Montana!
