Elkhorn Picnic Area

Elkhorn Picnic Area is located approximately 18 miles south of Boulder, MT, east of MT Highway 69. The area is located in the historic ghost town of Elkhorn and Elkhorn State Park. The area showcases a 19th century mining town that includes the historic Fraternity Hall and Gillian Hall nestled within the privately owned town of Elkhorn. In the early days, the area was the site of a silver mine, which has long since closed, leaving a picturesque town for visitors.

Open from May 1st through mid-September, weather dependent.

Directions

From Boulder, MT, take MT Highway 69 south for approximately six miles. Turn left onto Forest Service Road #258 and continue for approximately 12 miles. The picnic area is located just before you enter the town of Elkhorn on the right. The road is a gravel road suitable for passenger vehicle access. Watch for ATVs, motorcycles, and other OHVs on the road.
