Spruce Mountain Fire Lookout
Live a bit of history and enjoy incredible views of southeastern Wyoming including Medicine Bow Peak, Rob Roy Reservoir, Jelm Mountain and the southern end of the Snowy Range. Formerly used to detect fires, the tower rises 55 feet above a forested mountaintop in the Medicine Bow Mountain range. The tower was renovated and opened to the public for overnight rental in 1997. The rental fee is $40 per night and is open mid-June through the first of October, weather permitting. Maximum rental is 2 consecutive nights with no more than 10 nights in a calendar year and no more than 3 weekends in a calendar year. Additional camping is allowed below the tower with a total of 10 occupants at the site.
Amenities include a propane refrigerator, stove with oven, heater, lamps, 2 single beds, 4 chairs and table, hoist (pulley and rope) and a historic fire finder. No water is available at the tower and a pit toilet is located nearby. Elevation at the tower is 10,003 feet. Visitors should prepare for high altitude conditions. During the summer average daytime temperature is 70 degrees with a low of 30 degrees at night or during thunderstorms. During lightning storms, stay in cabin and do not touch metal furnishings. The tower is located seven miles west of Albany, Wyoming on FS road 500, a well-graveled road accessible by two-wheel drive vehicles. This area is managed by the Laramie Ranger District.
This site should be accessed only with a reservation. Please be mindful of other visitors and do not climb the tower unless you are the with the reservation-holding party.

Directions
Take Hwy 130 west of Laramie to Hwy 11 and Albany, WY. The tower is located seven miles west of Albany, Wyoming on Forest Road #500, a well-graveled road accessible by two-wheel-drive vehicles. Hiking and scenic driving opportunities abound nearby.
