Bicknell Bottoms Great Western Trailhead
Overview
Bicknell Bottoms Great Western Trailhead is located approximately 11 miles southeast of Loa, Utah along Highway 24 at 6,935 feet in elevation. This trailhead provides access to the Great Western Trail to the north and south, as well as to the Velvet Ridges open riding area.
Facilities
There is a small dirt parking area and an information kiosk at this site. Please pack out, what you pack in.
Natural Features
Bicknell Bottoms Great Western Trailhead is situated in a sandy parking area and features red rocks and Sagebrush. The Fremont River Flows through the Bicknell Valley. Thousand Lake Mountain is to the north, and Boulder Mountain is to the south.
Recreation
Popular activities in the nearby area include OHV Riding, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding and wildlife watching. Areas of scenic interest nearby include Boulder Mountain, Capital Reef National Park, Fruita Schoolhouse, Teasdale and Thousand Lake Mountain. Open riding is available just up the trail to the north in the Velvet Ridges. The trail also provides access to Hell's Hole which is a challenging trail open only to vehicles 50 inches or less in width.
General Information
Access is available seasonally and generally runs from April - November. Snow and wet road conditions may limit entry during other times of the year.

- Pack out all trash and follow leave no trace principles.
- Use existing sites and park only on durable surfaces (not vegetation). Do not camp in a way that blocks or prohibits access to the trails.
- Avoid creating new trails.
- All motorized travel is restricted to designated travel routes and areas. Cross country travel outside of the Velvet Ridges open riding area, driving around closed gates and width restriction barriers, and driving on meadows is prohibited.
- All OHVs are required to be registered and display a permit or sticker.
- Overnight camping at trailhead is prohibited.
No Fees are required for this site.
- Pets must be leashed at all times within this recreation area. This policy is in place to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all visitors and to protect wildlife.
- Clean up dog waste and dispose of it properly.
- Keep dogs from chasing, harassing, and disturbing wildlife, livestock or other visitors.
- Yield to other hikers, horses, and other trail users by stepping off the trail and controlling your dog.

Bicknell Bottoms GWT Trailhead is located approximately 11 miles southeast of Loa, Utah. Head south on N Main St toward W Center St 0.3 miles. Continue onto UT-24 E/E 300 S St. Continue to follow UT-24 E 10.7 miles. Turn left (north) onto Old Hwy to the trailhead kiosk, about 375 feet. See the link below for directions to the trailhead.
