Big Tujunga Dam and Maple Canyon Sediment Placement Site
LA County proposes to remove up to 4.4mm cubic yards of sediment from Big Tujunga Reservoir, and place it in the adjacent Maple Canyon, a designated disposal site in the forest plan. The purpose of the project is to restore the capacity and function of Big Tujunga Reservoir, which has received increased sedimentation following the Station Fire in 2009. The proposed action considers two options for transport of sediment - low emission trucks and a conveyor belt. Both the reservoir and the sediment placement site are currently under special use permit. By maintaining existing facilities within designated areas, the project is consistent with Goal 7.1 in the LMP, to focus the built environment into the minimum land area necessary to accommodate public needs. The project will likely involve consultations with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the State Historical Preservation Officer, and will require Clean Water Act Section 401/404 permits.
