Additional Office Information

The Doublehead Ranger District, named for the impressive Doublehead Mountain, lies about 3 miles south of Clear Lake and the Clear Lake National Wildlife Refuge. It is bordered by the Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forests to the west and encircles the intriguing Lava Beds National Monument. To the north is the Oregon border, while the eastern boundary with the Devil's Garden Ranger District divides the beautiful Modoc Plateau, where many historic battles of the Modoc War took place.

Within this region, the Medicine Highlands, formed by the largest shield-shaped volcano in North America, span over 200 square miles. This unique landscape features the Glass Mountain Obsidian Flow and the stunning Medicine Lake, known for its crystal-clear waters despite having no known outlets.

The Medicine Highlands and Medicine Lake are highlights of the Modoc National Forest, offering five developed campgrounds and the Door Knob Snowmobile Park, which connects to over 200 miles of the Tri-Forest Snowmobile Trail System. This enchanting area promises an unforgettable experience for all who venture into its natural beauty.
