The Warner Mountains form most of the Warner Mountain Ranger District, including the South Warner Wilderness. The Warners run north to south forming a series of peaks and basins that fill with snow in the winter and wildflowers of every color in the summer. Mountain springs form streams The stunning Warner Mountains are the centerpiece of the Warner Mountain Ranger District, including the remarkable South Warner Wilderness. This range, stretching from north to south, transforms into a winter wonderland and bursts into life with vibrant wildflowers during summer. Crystal-clear mountain springs create streams that flow into serene lakes, offering some of the most picturesque recreational opportunities in Northern California, often free from crowds.

Early settlers forged trails through these mountains, and some of their descendants still operate ranches nearby, holding grazing leases within this beautiful forest.

The South Warner Wilderness provides an authentic escape for backpackers and horseback riders. Well-equipped campgrounds and horse camps serve as staging areas for overnight adventures and tranquil spots for tent and trailer camping.

In addition, the Warner Mountain Ranger District features four obsidian mines, the only places in the Modoc National Forest where this striking volcanic glass can be collected, though a permit is required to ensure sustainability.
