Half Moon Meadow

Specific Trail Information

Trail Number

#5818

Trail Type

Standard/Terra Trail — A trail that has a surface consisting predominantly of the ground and that is designed and managed to accommodate use on that surface.

General Information

This trail runs for several miles from its start at the Haypress Trail by Halfmoon Creek. It initially passes several branches of Halfmoon Meadow. It then starts traversing a mixed conifer forest across a slope dropping to the south. After climbing to a divide, it enters the watershed of Bridge Creek, and views of Medicine Mountain open up. From here to Bridge Creek Trail, near Cedar Flat, the Halfmoon Meadow Trail slowly drops, with many undulations, passing alternately through burned forest and areas of impressive standing old growth forest. Watch for an especially large incense cedar about 1.3 miles from the start of the trail.

The first part of the trail from the Haypress Trail junction to the Bridge Creek divide received maintenance in 2016. Approximately the first mile of the trail is free of obstacles, and is suitable for stock. The rest of the section to the Bridge Creek divide has some down logs making progress difficult for stock, but the condition is not difficult for hikers. Along the rest of the trail, past the Bridge Creek divide to near Cedar Flat, as many as 50 large trees are down, making the trail unsuitable for stock at this time. Parts of the trail run through old burns and are tough going, due to the many logs and accumulations of fallen branches.

Approximate length: 4.2 miles

A wooden sign sits along the highway in the snow surrounded by snow covered trees.
