Information
In the event of a wildfire on the forest, our priority is responding to the fire. Immediately followed by, and often in tandem with suppression efforts, providing information to the public is our next immediate priority.
When a fire breaks on a forest, the most current information can be found on our official Facebook page. In addition to our Facebook page, there are several community group pages that typically update their information as we do. If a fire goes beyond Initial Attack and into extended attack, we will create an Inciweb entry for the fire and move information updates to that platform.
In addition to our social media channels, the Stanislaus National Forest provides information to all local media outlets. Within Tuolumne County those include MyMotherLode and the Union Democrat. In Calaveras County our primary media outlet is the Calaveras Enterprise, in Mariposa County, the Mariposa Gazette and the Sierra Sun Times, and in Alpine County, the Eastern Sierra Now newspaper.
With the Stanislaus National Forest covering four counties in the Central Sierra region, it is entirely possible the smoke you smell or see is not under Forest Service response authority. In the event you’re not seeing anything on the Stanislaus National Forest social media outlets, be sure to check in with the local Cal Fire units within the region, they include, Cal Fire Tuolumne Calaveras Unit, Cal Fire Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit as well as the local stations in Alpine County.
The Stanislaus National Forest is not able to send alerts via SMS text messaging but local residents can sign up for emergency notifications through their county: Tuolumne, Calaveras, Mariposa, and Alpine.
The Stanislaus National Forest maintains a fire information email distribution list, if you would like to be added to that list, please send an email to our public information officer, Benjamin Cossel.
