Special Use Permits

Certain types of uses of public lands require “Special Use Authorizations”. These include commercial activities such as filming, outfitter guiding, research, and recreation events.
White Water Rafting Permits

All floaters (kayakers and rafters) are required to have a permit between May 1 and October 15. Beginning Feb. 2, 2021, visitors should request reservations here or visit on www.recreation.gov. Permit holders must carry a front-and-back copy of the permit (print or digital) to show agency staff at any time during their trip. Learn more about guidelines for boating the Tuolumne River. Wilderness Permits

Emigrant, Carson-Iceberg, and Mokelumne Wildernesses are three areas of public land designated by Congress to be as free as possible from the impacts of human use. Travel is by foot or horseback. Motorized or mechanized vehicles are not permitted in these areas.
Forest Product Permits

Collecting and removing forest products requires a permit. Forest products include items such as, firewood, edible material, decorative material, minerals, plants, and other woody material.
Campfire Permits

A campfire permit is required for campfire use, except when camping in a developed campground.
Rock Permits:
The Stanislaus National Forest allows collection of surface rock for personal use. Click here for more details.
Christmas Tree Permits:
The Stanislaus National Forest is pleased to offer Christmas Tree Permits. For 2024, permits are ONLY available through recreation.gov, each tree is $10 and a maximum of 2 trees per permit; there is a recreation.gov permit processing $2.50 fee.
