Drones on National Forests

Most of the forest is open to recreational flying of Unmanned Aircraft Systems ("UAS" or "drones") as long as you're following FAA guidelines.  However, in some areas drones are not allowed.  These areas include:

Other helpful drone tips:

  • Register your drone and follow FAA guidelines.
  • Do not fly over or near wildlife as this can create stress that may cause significant harm, and even death.
  • Pursuit, harassment, or an intentional disturbance of animals during breeding, nesting, rearing of young, or other critical life history functions is prohibited unless legally approved as research or management.
  • If you are flying a drone for any commercial filming or research project you will likely need a permit.

Please Help Save Our Bats!

White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a disease in bats caused by a fungus and has killed millions of bats in the eastern U.S.  WNS was recently discovered in Washington.  Humans can spread the fungus on their boots, clothing, and gear. You can help prevent the spread of WNS when you visit caves and climbing areas by:

  • DO NOT wear the same footwear used in other caves unless completely cleaned.
  • DO NOT bring dogs into caves.
  • CLEAN your shoes, clothing, and gear of any dirt or mud before entering a cave.
  • WASH your hands and exposed skin.
  • CHANGE into clean clothing and shoes before getting into your car to leave a site.
  • CLEAN equipment with alcohol wipes if equipment is not washable.
  • WASH clothing, hats, and shoes in hot, soapy water for at least 20 minutes.
  • If you see bats, please avoid disturbing them and do not touch them.
