Hunchback Trail #793

The Hunchback Trail is accessed via the Lower Hunchback Trailhead and runs through the middle of the Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness. This trail traverses the forested Hunchback Ridge, which has several rocky viewpoints along the route.
Starting from the Zigzag Ranger Station, this trail climbs steeply for 1.9 miles, gaining over 2,000 feet in elevation to a viewpoint. Leaving the viewpoint, the trail traverses the Hunchback ridgeline until descending into a saddle and junction with the Green Canyon Trail #793A (3.6 miles). The trail continues for 2.4 miles as a series of steep climbs and descents that can be rocky, narrow and covered with fallen trees, to the Devil’s Peak Lookout trail.
Due to safety hazards, Devil's Peak Lookout is closed to public entry. From the Lookout, continue southeast for 1.2 miles to the southern trailhead at Kinzel Lake/Sherar Burn Road (Forest Road 2613). Some segments of this trail are primitive with minimal tread surface, which can lead to several scrambles.

Directions
To reach the north end of the trail from Portland, OR - travel 17.5 miles east of Sandy on US Hwy 26. Turn right (south) into Zigzag Ranger Station and park at the east end of the lot. The Trailhead is n the south side of the lot.
To access the south end of the trail from Portland, OR - travel 29.5 miles east of Sandy on US Hwy 26. Turn right (south) at Still Creek Campground Road (Forest Road 2650). Drive 1.1 miles and take the 2nd right onto E Chimney Rock Road. Travel 0.5 mile and continue onto Kinzel Lake/Sherar Burn Road (Forest Road 2613). Drive 9 miles to the end of Kinzel Lake Road (Forest Road 2613). Parking is at the end of the road. The trail starts on the north side of the road. Forest Road 2613 is a rough, narrow, one lane gravel road with turnouts. It is not recommended for trailers.
